The DRC is turning forest protection into a development opportunity. With the AXIS program, stored carbon is tokenized to fund schools, health, and infrastructure for local communities.

Congolese Carbon: A New Wealth Serving Communities Thanks to the AXIS Program

The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to one of the planet's greatest ecological treasures: its vast tropical forests. Beyond their essential role for biodiversity, they act as vital green lungs, absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) and helping to regulate the global climate.

Today, this natural capacity to capture carbon is transforming into a major economic opportunity for the country. Through the AXIS program, the value of the carbon stored in Congolese forests can be concretely leveraged to finance the development of the communities living near and protecting these ecosystems.

Coordinated by the Social Fund of the DRC (FSRDC) under the leadership of Philippe Ngwala Malemba, in partnership with Phoenix Capital BV, this innovative program aims to turn an ecological asset into a driver of sustainable and inclusive economic development.

Carbon Tokenization: An Innovation Serving Communities

At the heart of the AXIS program lies an innovative financial mechanism: carbon tokenization. Concretely, this means converting the environmental value of carbon sequestered by forests into digital assets, called tokens. Each token represents a measurable and certified quantity of avoided or captured CO₂.

These assets can then be offered on international carbon markets. This means that the very act of preserving forests generates financial resources that are directly reinvested into local development projects.

A concrete example

Consider a protected forest area in the DRC. Through conservation measures, the emission of one million tons of CO₂ is avoided.

  • This amount equals one million carbon credits.
  • Valued at $10 each on the market, this represents a potential value of $10 million.

These $10 million can then fund tangible infrastructure: building schools, equipping health centers, developing roads, or supporting agricultural cooperatives. Environmental protection thus becomes a direct source of progress for local populations.

A New Green Economy for the DRC

With the Congo Basin, the DRC holds the world's second-largest tropical rainforest after the Amazon, an essential green lung for the planet. Carbon tokenization, driven by the AXIS program, paves the way for integrating this wealth into a modern and virtuous green economy.

This unprecedented model is based on a virtuous cycle:

  • Protecting forests and their biodiversity.
  • Attracting international financing through carbon value.
  • Investing these funds in local community development.
  • Actively contributing to the global fight against climate change.

Making Nature an Engine for Development

For too long, the exploitation of natural resources in Africa has happened without local populations seeing the benefits. With the approach proposed by the AXIS program, a paradigm shift is taking place: environmental protection becomes the very engine of development.

Congolese carbon is no longer just an abstract concept. It is transforming into a strategic resource capable of funding a better future for communities, while playing a crucial role in preserving our planet. A major step forward for the DRC and for the world.
